When President Bush signed the 2008 Defense Act he issued 4 Signing Statements. In addition to the Administration’s unconstitutional usage of the Signing Statement, these Signing Statements show the hypocrisy of the President’s intension to spread democracy to the Middle East and the real reason for the invasion of Iraq. Another reason that these four Signing Statement are important is because they describe the logic behind the Bush Administration’s lies for the war in Iraq and the Administration’s criminal intentions and actions that led America to war in Iraq. The fourth Signing Statement is the most revealing, its reverses a congressional ban on any permanent U.S. military bases in Iraq and A BAN ON ANY ACTION THAT EXERCISES U.S. CONTROL OVER IRAQ’S OIL MONEY. The other three signing statements are attempts to Obstruct Justice, an additional crime: A signing statement that blocks the setting up of a commission to probe contracting fraud in Iraq and Afghanistan. A signing statement that blocks expanded protection for whistleblowers working for government contractors; crony capitalism at its worst. A signing statement that blocks U.S. intelligences from promptly responding to congressional requests for documents. "President Bush on Saturday further cemented his legacy of fighting for strong executive powers, using his veto to shut down a Congressional effort to limit the Central Intelligence Agency’s latitude to subject terrorism suspects to harsh interrogation techniques. "Mr. Bush vetoed a bill that would have explicitly prohibited the agency from using interrogation methods like waterboarding, a technique in which restrained prisoners are threatened with drowning and that has been the subject of intense criticism at home and abroad. Many such techniques are prohibited by the military and law enforcement agencies." [New York Times March 9, 2008] Actually waterboarding and TORTURE are illegal under U.S. law and International treaties ratified by the U.S. Senate. If action is not taken immediately, the Bush Administration will continue to subvert and undermine the Constitution. This will set a precedent for the next president, wither a republican or democrat, to use and expand the practice. It will also embolden the Bush Administration to pursue military action against Iran and take more actions assigned to other branches of government. One example of this is the Administration's claim that it can sign a treaty with Iraq without congressional approval.
